Fashion Icons Voice Support of Iranian Women In Response to Mahsa Amini’s Death

When 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini was arrested by “morality police” for violating hijab dress rules, she died of cardiac failure while being detained. Mahsa’s death ignited protests across the world. Women have cut their hair and have spoken out on social media to protest oppression.

Vogue Arabia posted a photo of Mahsa Amini with the caption, “On September 16, 22-year-old #MahsaAmini passed away after being brutally beaten on the head by Iran’s “morality policy” for wearing her hijab “incorrectly”. The tragic news has shaken up the country as protests across the capital and western Iran have shed light on an entire people’s plight against the injustices that continue to loom over its women.

Fashion icons such as Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid, Justin Bieber, and many more have used social media as a platform to share Mahsa’s story and vocalize their support for Iranian women. Kim also called attention to the death of 17-year-old Nika Shakarami who was kidnapped, tortured, raped, and killed by Iran’s Islamic regime for protesting.

At least 92 people have been killed since the protests for Iranian women ignited.

Balenciaga has also voiced their solidarity with Iranian women by taking to Instagram. The luxury brand wiped its Instagram feed to draw attention to one post which says, “Women Life Freedom” in English and Farsi.

Singer and Versace it-girl Dua Lipa posted to Instagram to highlight Sarina Esmailzadeh, Nika Shakarami, Hadis Najafi, and Mahsa Amini– “four young women out of more than 100 protesters to pay with their lives.” In her post Dua pleaded:

“Please don’t turn away, keep the world watching.”

Supermodel Gigi Hadid voiced her support of Iranian women in an Instagram post in which she wrote:

“To the GIRLS, WOMEN, FREEDOM FIGHTERS of Iran: We see you. We are in awe of you. We are behind you. So much courage!!! You deserve to express yourself however you deem fit. Sending strength! #ripmahsaamini#nikashakarami.”

Singer Halsey posted on her Instagram story:

“‘MY BODY, MY CHOICE’ is not a monolith reserved for women of the west. . . Mahsa Amini had no choice. Not even the choice to live or die. The world is mourning her with great force.”

Supporting the thousands who are taking the streets to fight back, are some of Iran’s most influential women, from Her Imperial Majesty Empress #FarahPahlavi, to actor #GolshiftehFarahani and visual artist #ShirinNeshat, along with international names including model #BellaHadid.
