Fall and Winter Microtrends 2022, a Breakdown

Microtrends rise to popularity quicker than regular fashion trends, and just as quickly, they disappear. Just this past summer, we witnessed butterfly tops and cowboy boots shoot to the top of the trend ladder––aka TikTok feeds––then in a matter of months, off of the shelves. The swiftness of a microtrend’s fall varies wildly. Even knowing that a trend will fall, who doesn’t love to indulge in one here or there? Here’s a breakdown of the latest microtrends to spark this season.

Sequin Everything

Glisten in your evening outfit with a statement sequined piece. Whether you are dressed in a mini skirt, dress, shirt, or article of your choosing, make your outfit pop with some sequin sparkle. We can thank brands like Halpern and Jonathan Simkhai for this microtrend ode to the disco era of the 60’s and 70’s.

Y2K Sunglasses

Enter the matrix of street style with a pair of futuristic– intergalactic even– sunglasses. These modern shades are perfect for a hike, walk on the beach, or even a rave. Only time will tell if this trending style will die out early on in the season or become a fashion staple.

Sambas

A 1949 sneaker originally designed for soccer players to train on icy grounds, the Adidas Samba sneaker, has made its comeback into the fashion world. The sneakers revived when supermodel Bella Hadid was pictured wearing them walking on the streets of SoHo. Thanks to Bella Hadid’s revival of the Adidas samba sneaker, I too even caved and bought a pair!

Opera Gloves

Attending the opera soon? Me neither, but let’s talk about the recent rise of opera gloves. The elegant, yet classic evening couture accessory has made its debut back into society, but now in street wear too. If you’re looking to add a finishing touch to your look, opera gloves are the perfect compliment to any outfit.

These are few of many micro-trends worth the honorary mention, but there is a question of whether these trends are worthy of remaining in mainstream fashion for a few more seasons to come. As much as we all love to indulge in a trend, time will tell if the microtrends of this season will stay or go.
