2022’s Top 8 Autumn Hats, Ranked

The leaves are beginning to fall, and autumn is finally upon us! This month, the function of our headwear evolves from shade to warmth. With this transition comes fun changes in aesthetics, too. So to kick off the closing of this year, I present to you my definitive ranking of 2022’s 8 cutest fall hats.

8. Earmuffs

A versatile, cozy choice that I’d argue does count as a hat. They efficiently warm the ears (very important), and are, of course, cute and fuzzy (even more important). One could say they verge a little too far into winter territory, but I’ll take it.

7. Headband

Sure, maybe this isn’t completely a hat, but again, I’ve decided it counts. The headband instantly ups your “classic” factor, and makes you look just a little bit more smart and put-together, with a dash of that Rory Gilmore’s brand of femininity, of course.

6. Flat cap

The flat cap is super simple, but it packs a punch. It’ll go with just about anything—confidence is what saves you from the fate of merely looking like an unfashionable 1920s newsboy in this style.

5. Knit hat

The beanie is classic but so underrated. Warm, cozy, infinite varieties, DIY-able… There’s not much else I can say.

4. Baker boy hat

Oh, the 2000s! When styled right (but only when styled right) the baker boy hat is so Serena van der Woodsen. It’s just a bit kitschy and whimsical, but also makes you look like you definitely read books and always have somewhere cool to be. And don’t forget that the legal name for fall is actually Red (Taylor’s Version) Season, and the best way to honor Ms. Swift in this important time is to wear a baker boy hat like she does on the album cover.

3. Baseball cap

The most versatile hat of all! You may argue that baseball caps are for summer, but I’d counter that the sun still beats down during the fall. The baseball cap looks good with layers, but is also perfect for dressing anything down.

2. Headphones

I’ve decided that headphones do, in fact, count as a hat due to their impossible-to-ignore impact on the 2022 fashion zeitgeist. And they’re a glorious one. You look mysterious. You look cool. You look booked and busy. Who is she? And it has the added function of playing music into your ears. What an amazing invention!

1. Beret

An unexpected choice for number 1, you might say, but just look how chic! I want to be the type of person who can put on a beret and pull it off. It’s an energy, I’m telling you! Berets can be so cute, but also so aloof and high brow. Simply perfection.

Not included in this list: fedora, top hat, cowboy hat, witch’s hat. In my heart of hearts, the witch’s hat takes the real first place… but maybe as a society, we aren’t there yet. Happy warm hat season!
