We’ve all been there— frantically Googling last-minute Halloween costumes to throw together a few hours before the function. We can all see the 2000’s-style, over-filtered photos of outdated memes and TV characters. These costumes are always unoriginal or out-of-style, and any decent costumes seem to require lots of online purchases. As college students, that’s not great either. This article will provide some creative, last-minute costumes for singles, pairs, and groups that you (hopefully) haven’t seen before.
Singles
Philadelphia’s beloved Flyers mascot, Gritty
All you need for this costume is a Flyers jersey and a black beanie. While the jersey is a bit harder to come by, try asking around! We do live in Philadelphia, after all. If you want to go all out, add a pair of orange pants. Don’t worry if you can’t find a pair- the costume can do without them.
Lady Bird McPherson from Lady Bird
Take the classic school girl costume to the next level as Lady Bird’s title character. Channel Lady Bird’s angst with a pleated skirt, white collared shirt, and a sweater vest. Make a bright pink cast out of your athlete friend’s pre-wrap or any pink fabric you might have lying around. With this costume, you’ll be ready to run for President of your all-girls Catholic high school.
AOC’s Tax the Rich
Everyone’s eyes were glued to this year’s Met Gala as we saw our favorite stars and media icons walk the red carpet for the first time in two years. Some were particularly drawn to U.S. representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Tax the Rich” statement on a white ball gown. Use a red marker to write this phrase on any piece of white clothing.
Phoebe Bridgers
Elevate an old skeleton costume or any skeleton memorabilia by dressing as the iconic Phoebe Bridgers in her signature skeleton outfit. Just listen to “Motion Sickness” a few times to really channel Phoebe in this costume.
Pairs
Rick and Morty
Explore the Halloween galaxies by dressing as animated characters Rick and Morty. This pair always gets lost among the endless tacky duo costumes on Pinterest and Buzzfeed. Wear a yellow t-shirt and blue jeans to dress as Morty. For Rick, borrow a lab coat from your Nursing friend to wear over a blue shirt tucked into a pair of khakis.
Amy and Molly from Booksmart
Amy and Molly’s blue jumpsuits are not everyone’s fashion staple, but you can still bring out all the quirks of these characters with a blue monochrome outfit, berets, and white high tops. If you’re lacking these jumpsuits (which most of us probably are), try overalls and a blue t-shirt or just a blue top tucked into some jeans. You’re bound to have as eventful a time as Amy and Molly did the night before high school graduation.
Big Mouth’s Hormone Monsters
Dress as this rowdy pair with a yellow-tone outfit and spare lion ears and tail from Halloweens past. You can elevate the ensemble with some horns from another old costume or make some using a headband. You can even turn this into a group costume with the other hormone monsters that are featured throughout the show.
Groups
The cast of Sex Education
Season 3 of Netflix’s Sex Education was released last month, so the show is fresh in everyone’s mind. Grab your black eyeliner and combat boots to dress as Maeve Wiley, your brightest and funkiest prints to dress as Eric Effiong, or your best striped shirt for Otis Milburn. The options are unlimited. Space buns and pastels for Lily Iglehart, overalls for Ola Nyman, and so on!
Monster High Dolls
Ditch the overused Bratz and Barbie costumes at every Halloween outing. The Monster High characters are objectively cool, and the costumes are all original. Get together with a group of friends to dress as Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Clawdeen Wolf, Cleo de Nile, Ghoulia Yelps, and Lagoona Blue. These costumes are a bit more intricate, but you can recreate any of them with a colorful mini skirt or pair of leggings, pumps, and maybe some temporary hair dye.
