Statement Pants

This fall, step out of your jean comfort zone.

I’m a loyal skinny-jean user. I own all the basics: medium wash, rinse, light wash, light-almost-white wash, white, black, grey, that weird black-grey-in-between. The perfect skinny jean, one that lifts and hugs without suffocating and makes you ooze with confidence, is the little black dress of the pant world. But sometimes we’re not looking for the LBD. We crave a tulle and taffeta ball gown or a slinky sequin dress. The non-LBDs are just as essential, though. Here are some statement pants that’ll force you to switch out of your favorite pair of Levi’s and finally throw them in the washer.

Plaid

Traditionally preppy clothes don’t need to be styled with a cable knit and flats. Update your plaid-pant-pairings by rocking a pair of white platform sneakers or your tried-and-true mid-calf boots.

Madewell Pleated Wide-Leg Pants in Plaid, $138
Sézane Arthur Pants, $165

Leather

The leather scene has dominated the ’80s-centric fashion world beyond boots and outerwear. Keep it classic in matte black leather pants or go big in autumnal shades of olive, burgundy, and white.

Urban Outfitters Pria Faux Leather Straight Leg Pant, $30

Animal Print

Animal print is the new neutral, and I’m living for it. Don’t settle for only snakeskin booties or a leopard print crop top. Dress your legs up in animal print, and embrace your inner cat or reptile.

Topshop Snake Print Plisse Flare Trousers, $55
Free People Wake Up Pants, $88

Corduroy

When you’re not quite ready to fully transition into non-jeans, thick corduroys are the perfect All-American autumn staple.

Levi’s Ribcage Corduroy Wide Leg Pant, $98
Everlane The Corduroy Wide Leg Pant, $78

Satin

Pajamas for daywear — does it really get any better than that?

Reformation Chandler Pant, $198
Topshop Slouch Satin Jogger Trousers, $68
