For all of us singles out there, sometimes Valentine’s Day can feel like we’re missing out on something big. Whether that be the romantic dates, the sweet chocolates, or the teddy bears — yes, they’re cliché, but we secretly wish we could be a part of them.
But fret not! There are so many better things you could be doing like going and seeing a chick flick with your pals, like I did. I was lucky enough to see an early screening of Isn’t it Romantic, starring Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth.
The movie is not only cute, but plays with this idea of satirising every rom com movie out so far. Rebel Wilson does an amazing job of staying true to the audience as this relatable girl named Natalie, who is very confused about how her life has gone from average, same-old routine to being knocked unconscious, gets put into this alter-universe that is rom-com central. She is the leading female in this romantic comedy film, and she faces every cliché there is, including when she wakes up from her coma and says “This isn’t an ER, it’s Williams Sonoma” because of the pretty doctor and spotless room. She has a larger than life apartment in NYC compared to her actual dirty studio, and the NY neighborhoods are flawless and fragrant, unlike the filthy dump right outside her apartment. She has a gay best-friend, whose sole purpose is to be there for Natalie for any advice, without any role or storyline. Her office is high-tech, she has a female enemy in the office, and a flash mob is led by none other than Liam Hemsworth. There’s doves flying, and “A Thousand Miles” is repeatedly played as well as “I wanna dance with somebody” at the end of the movie with everyone somehow knowing the choreography. There is even a makeover montage with music. All in all, it’s hilarious, and we can’t help but laugh and smile as Liam and Rebel kiss in the rain in the middle of a NYC crosswalk, or when Natalie realizes at the end that she’s been in love with her best friend the whole time and stops his wedding, another cliché in itself, and they end up together — of course.
We can’t not talk about the outfits in this movie. Like all rom coms, all of the characters have the best looks and always look put together, even when they first wake up in the morning. In this movie, Rebel Wilson did a bit of self-promotion by wearing clothes from her own plus-size fashion line, Rebel Wilson x Angels. She even posted on Instagram with one of the outfits, captioning it “Fun fact: in my character Natalie’s HUGE closet in ISN’T IT ROMANTIC I filled it mainly with @rebelwilsonxangels clothing!” So, you can imitate her cute and girly outfits in the movie by just going to your local Nordstrom or Bloomingdales and picking up the exact outfit. The choice of having a plus-size female actress promoting plus-size clothing is one of the key things that makes this movie progressive and unique. I think that more movies should take this concept as an inspiration for future ideas. The movie was also produced by Rebel, along with Priyanka Chopra playing a role and reinforcing female agency by providing the film with diversity.
Other movies I consider having the best rom com outfits include Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which you can imitate by finding a great black dress and oversized sunglasses like Holly wears in the famous movie, or Mean Girls, especially Regina George’s daring outfits. Any white graphic tee and adding a touch of pink on Wednesdays would do. The Notebook is also a classic in itself, yet so are Allie’s outfits, like the famous blue dress in the lake scene which you can imitate by finding anything lace and adding a touch of pearls to it. Dirty Dancingis another, which you can imitate Baby’s basic 80s style with a bodysuit and jean shorts to go dancing in the summertime in. Cluelessis an additional great example, which you can mimic by either dressing in Cher’s signature yellow plaid ensemble or any other 90s style fashion like vests and A-line skirts. Don’t forget your headband! Think pink with Legally Blonde, and anything overdone just as Elle Woods would wear. Or get yourself a ballerina skirt to look like Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. If you want to go back really to the classics, try adding a flower crown and any long dress like in Sixteen Candles, or a polka dot dress like Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink. Get yourself a long peacoat to imitate Mary Fiore in the Wedding Planner, or a sharp coat for Andy in Devil wears Prada. Lastly, to imitate Sandra Bullock in The Proposal, get yourself a black chic blazer from H&M.
No matter if you’re looking for a great new movie to watch, or want to admire yet another iconic fashion sense, go watch Isn’t it Romanticand enjoy!
