Fun Alternatives to the “Penn Uniform”

Stand out without breaking the bank with these unique pieces

Even while rushing down Locust Walk to their 10am, it is clear that Penn students are very well dressed. No matter how early they have class or how busy their schedules are, many students still find time to bring the runway to the recitation. This leaves stylish students who are new to the campus or who are trying to break out into the style scene in a tough place. At a university as stylish as Penn, how can they distinguish themselves? And how can they do so at an affordable price? Well, one place to start without going too far out of your comfort zone is by putting a modern twist on the aptly named “Penn Uniform.” You know, the Penn basics: Golden Goose or other high-end low tops, a puffy down coat (you know the brand), and a pair of black skinny jeans or leggings. While these pieces look great and are trendy, they leave room for slightly more exciting options at a more accessible price.

The Sneakers

What’s great about Golden Goose sneakers is their versatility and pop of character. While they can be worn with practically anything, from maxi-skirts to mini shorts, they also bring a unique, distressed look and eye-catching logo. However, they are a luxury that is out of reach for many and that may not be attractive to those who want to break out of the mold. These sneakers, the Veja V-10, Adidas Army Trainer, and Nike Cortez, have all the great characteristics of the Golden Goose: minimalist styling, low-top profile, retro detailing, plus look great beat-up and lived in. I love the Veja’s slightly chunky sole and red detail, reminiscent of the dad-sneaker trend that has recently taken over, and the Adidas’s suede paneling and gum sole, which only improve with age. The Cortez’s pop of color complements its simple shape and helps you stick out from the white sneaker crowd.

The Jeans

Trust me, as someone who appreciates black skinny pants, I find it hard to wear anything else. But while these pants are extremely versatile and almost universally flattering, there is a time and a place for something more exciting. As we have seen, denim is definitely having its moment right now, with runway models and teenagers alike rocking everything from baggy 90s jeans, to high and tapered mom jeans, to, of course, black skinnies. Why not contribute to this hot trend and get some fun jeans too? I particularly like denim with an alternating stripe or split tone. If you are feeling particularly creative, you can pick up some jeans from the many thrift stores in Philly and paint them.

The Puffer

On a cold winter’s day, you’ll often find yourself lost in a sea of furry collars, most likely from coats with one of two ubiquitous logos. Yet, for those of us who want to stick out of this sea of parkas in a way that doesn’t make our bank accounts cringe, there are many choices. These coats redefine the classic parka through their color, shape, and style. If you want something with a pop of color, a unique silhouette, or a different look, here are a few great options.
