Ingredient Spotlight: Pumpkin Extract

Fall is almost over, but don’t put the pumpkins away just yet! In order to keep the fall spirit alive, let’s look at what this amazing fruit can do for your skin.

Pumpkin extract is a great ingredient because it’s packed with essential antioxidants, minerals, and fatty acids that improve the skin’s appearance and overall health. Here are a few of its benefits.

Skin-Brightening

Pumpkins contain high amounts of vitamin C, which is highly effective at fading dark marks, evening out the skin, and brightening up a dull complexion! Additionally, they contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) which gently exfoliate to reveal smoother and brighter skin.

Anti-Aging

Antioxidants help fight off free radical damage caused by air pollution and UV rays, which speed up the aging process. In addition to brightening up the skin, vitamin C also stimulates collagen production. Collagen improves skin elasticity, reduces wrinkles and increases moisture, helping the skin maintain a youthful appearance. Vitamin A (aka retinol) is another great anti-aging antioxidant found in pumpkins. Similar to vitamin C, vitamin A not only stimulates collagen production but also accelerates cell renewal and repair. It’s particularly effective due to its small molecular structure, which allows it to properly penetrate the skin.

Moisturizes and Improves Barrier Function

The fatty acids and vitamin E found in pumpkins help the skin maintain a healthy barrier function, thus preventing moisture loss. They also regulate the skin’s sebum (oil) levels, making it suitable for oily skin.

Fights Acne

Zinc is one of the minerals found in pumpkins. It has anti-inflammatory properties which reduce the appearance of blemishes. Much like vitamin E, zinc also regulates sebum activity; excess sebum clogs pores, which leads to acne outbreaks.
