Saying Yes to These Fashion No-Nos

Styles that once received a bad reputation in the fashion world are now becoming the hottest trends.

The fashion world is always changing. This is why shopping in your mom’s closet for a dress she wore 30 years ago — but resembles Kylie Jenner’s ensemble in the slightest manner — is never a bad idea. But what about the ‘fashion rules’ that seemed set in stone from the beginning of time? Well, those are changing too.

Leopard Print

This spot-covered print has had a complex relationship with the fashion world throughout the years. Often, the pattern constitutes images of Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi or Janice from Friends and is quick to be judged as tacky. In actuality, the print has been featured by prominent designers like Christian Dior in his 1947 “New Look” collection and Azzedine Alaïa’s 1991 Fall/Winter collection (pictured below). Even female political figures, like Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama, have donned the print. Now in Fall 2018, LaQuan Smith, who has dressed celebrities like Rihanna and Beyonce, features the pattern several times in his new collaboration with ASOS.

Cargo Pants

Who doesn’t love a good practical pant? While cargo pants are usually affiliated with 90’s grunge or Kim Possible Halloween costumes, these bottoms are becoming high-fashion in 2018. Multiple pairs made an appearance on the runway during Givenchy’s Spring 2019 collection and various celebrities have taken the trend to the streets. One example is Kim Kardashian West, who has worn several pairs around Calabasas—including Yeezy neon cargo sweatpants. Hey, at least with all those pockets we won’t need to carry around a purse!

Western Boots

Gigi Hadid appears to be single-handedly making these western boots trendy. The model has worn her fair share of different heights and colors, including a Miron Crosby 17”-high pair adorned with star and crescent appliques. However, her favorite pair might just be the ankle-high black boots completed with a buckle at the ankle, in which she’s been photographed multiple times. Western boots have also made their appearance on the runway, including for Fendi and Calvin Klein. You can find yourself a pair at retailers like Nordstrom and DSW or even purchase the Heeled Ankle Boot designed by Hadid for Tommy Hilfiger.

Camo

Camouflage print in 2018 is all about refined simplicity. The pattern has strutted the catwalk for designers like Michael Kors, Zadig & Voltaire, and Jeremy Scott. While keeping the rest of their outfits relatively simple, celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Hailey Baldwin, and Victoria Beckham took camo to the streets with shirts, shorts, or pants featuring the brown-green hue. Camo tops pair well with denim bottoms, while camo bottoms are an excellent match for neutral tees and tanks.
