Jade Rolling

An ancient technique to recharge your skin.

As far back as seventh century, people have used jade facial rollers to enhance skin complexion. In particular, these unique tools originated in China where the stone was believed to have healing and protective properties. Clearly, these rollers have withstood the test of time–but what exactly is jade rolling?

The Basics

The mechanism of a jade roller is undoubtedly very basic. It features a stone of pure jade (usually around an inch to an inch and a half long) that is attached to a handle usually made out of some sort of metal. In essence, it basically looks like a small paint roller. Many versions are double sided, featuring a smaller stone on the end for use in more sensitive areas like around the eyes.

So does this tool actually work? Many health experts say it’s actually quite beneficial to use a jade roller on facial nerves. In particular, jade rollers instigate blood circulation, depuffs the skin are around the eyes, improves skin elasticity and ultimately detoxifies the skin by promoting lymphatic drainage. Asides from tangible health benefits, many users claim that using this tool is simply soothing to place the cool stone on one’s face.

Our face stores a lot of tension which may cause wrinkles and fine lines especially around the forehead and eyes. By using a jade roller, we can iron out these kinks, so not only are you giving your skin a boost in present time, but you are also preventing wrinkles down the line. In exactly the same way that a deep tissue massage can leave your body feeling relaxed and refreshed, a facial massage using a jade roller helps give your overworked facial muscles a little love. Jade rollers can also help calm breakouts and acne. If one holds the frozen mini roller against a cystic acne bump, it can help calm redness and swelling. Overall, using a jade roller can brighten the complexion, diminish appearance of fine lines, increase blood circulation, assist lymphatic drainage, and prevent wrinkles and fine lines in the future.

One thing to look out for, however, is to make sure the jade rollers are made from authentic materials. Many cheaper versions that sell for under $10 are actually made from glass and infused with dye to match the color of the jade stone. Another giveaway of inferior quality is that the roller makes noise when you use it. However, to be fair, reviewers of both the expensive and cheaper jade rollers seem to enjoy their product about the same, so whether it’s worth the extra money is ultimately up to you.
