To Mei Kawijiri, nails are just another canvas to display her talent. Looking through her Instagram feed, or the 21st century version of a résumé, there is no object or theme that is off limits.
I first met Mei at Valley Nails, a nail salon in Soho known for its intricate and creative nail art. After leaving the salon to start her own company, Mei has become one of the most sought after manicurists in the country, using Instagram and Snapchat to launch and drive her career. Mei is not just panting nails, she is making art. She has the ability to transform any artist, designer, theme or idea and depict it on a 3-6” canvas.
One of my favorite manicures Mei painted was of Haruki Murakami’s works of art. Her ability to take large scale paintings and sculptures, such as Damien Hirst’s, For the Love of God, Roy Lichtenstein’s pop art, or Banksy’s graffiti, and convert them onto a nail is astonishing. It is clear just by looking at her Instagram, Snapchat, and features in magazines that I am not the only one amazed by her talent. Her boundary-breaking manicures have attracted thousands of clients, – she now has over 55.5k follows on Instagram – such as Heidi Klum, Meaghan Trainor, and Hannah Bronfman.
