The Lowdown on Kylie Lip Kits

Even if you don’t obsessively Keep Up with the Kardashian-Jenners like I do (no shame), you undoubtedly know about Kylie Cosmetics. The reality-star-turned-lip-stick-mogul released a line of makeup over the past year that includes matte liquid lipsticks, liners, glosses, metallics, and most recently eye shadow and liner. The first round sold out in seconds, and then went on eBay for over $1,000. Luckily, Kylie released multiple rounds of the products, and rolled out new shades along the way. The products still sell out fairly quickly, so if you want to purchase one, set an alarm and click quickly. I wish I could say being ready to pounce on my computer, watching the seconds count down, is more commitment than I usually put into trying a product. Alas, I do this often enough that even though the first round of Kylie’s kits sold out in a mere 30 seconds, I managed to get one. By the second round, sold out in a minute, I had three of the initial shades. At $29 a kit, people have often asked me if its worth the effort to get one. So, I broke down the pros and cons while testing 12 Kylie shades for you. My compulsive shopping finally proves good for something.

In the matte liquid lipstick & liners, moving from the elbow to the hand, Taylor and Briella are modeling Candy K, Posie K, Koko K, 22, Ginger and Kristen. The glosses are highly pigmented and go on smoothly; there is no need for multiple swipes to get full coverage and color. Taylor was skeptical at first, and told me “these aren’t going to show up on my skin”. She was then impressed by their vibrance. As a frequent lip kit wearer, I warn you: this shiz stays FOREVER. It does not budge, through drinking, kissing, eating, what have you. Long-wear is great but that also means any mistake in the liner application stays with you. Pro tip: apply it and then go in with a flesh-toned pencil or concealer -I like Nars’ Radiant Creamy Concealer. Also exfoliate and moisturize your lips before applying to avoid flaking or creasing. They also have a heavenly vanilla birthday cake scent- though they do not taste like much.

Honestly, the red (Mary Jo K) is the best red I’ve ever tried. Kristen and Posie K are favorites of everyone I’ve asked who has tried them. The brown tones in both the glosses and the lipkits have the habit of making your mouth look, well let’s just say three of the girls I asked likened it to a hole more commonly found on one’s derrière. Taylor and Briella were both confused about who would wear the orange shade (22) and why. Fair. I guess if you looking for the finishing touch on your pumpkin or oompa loompa costume, look no further.

Above the girls show off four glosses and one metallic shade. They seemed to be okay with the Metallic (Heir), but hated the glosses, as do I -the regretful owner of multiple gloss shades. If you’re looking for a trendy, high performing liquid matte lipstick, then be sure to tune in to the next Kylie Cosmetics drop and snatch one up before they sell out, again.
