There was a time when you could tell which hallmate was in the bathroom stall in front of you just by looking at their shoes. This useful skill has become harder and harder to master because of the sudden arrival of Adidas Superstars.

All jokes aside, I see people wearing them everyday on Locust, in class, and in line at Honeygrow. Adidas Superstars have been around for as long as I can remember, and are definitely one of Adidas’s iconic shoes. I distinctly remember wearing the ones with sky blue stripes as a middle schooler not because I thought they were stylish, but because sky blue was my favorite color.

For the past year or so, Adidas Superstars with black stripes have become so beloved that their popularity rivals that of white Converse low-tops. What is it that makes them so popular? When I finally caved in bought a pair recently, I knew right away.

Not only are they trendy, but they are also very comfortable. The rounded, spacious toe prevents the pinky toe pain that often accompanies a long day, a pain that can sometimes be a problem with Converse. More bonuses: they don’t need to be broken in and can be easily slipped on and off.

The simple design makes them flexible, they go with almost any outfit, and they add a casual yet sporty element to any ensemble. Additionally, both genders can use them as a staple in their closet. Although they may be labeled as “basic,” their versatility and comfort make them worth the investment ($80).
