Growing up, I heard my mother tell me over and over again “less is more.” It was always “less chocolate cake after dinner”, “less TV on school nights”, less, less, less. Now that I’m a bit older, I can see this proverb proving itself true in a much more positive light in the world of design! Minimalism has been making major strides in housing architecture, interior design, and has now made its way into the collections of your favorite designers.

Another personal favorite of mine, Alexander Wang, has also been known for his minimalistic yet unique designs. Wang tends to add more of a rocker vibe to his collections, and continued this trend in his Fall 2015 Ready to Wear collection. The line featured lots of dark tones with sparks of metallics and leather. In this look, Alexander Wang took this classic minimalist dress silhouette and added some major personality by layering it over a black cutout turtleneck and fishnet stockings. If you’re interested in meandering into minimalism, but aren’t totally ready to ditch all your patterned apparel, this is a great style to try! Layers can completely change the feel of an outfit and are a great way to add a personal touch to your look.
Narciso Rodriguez is a known minimalist designer as well, and went all out with this trend in his Fall/Winter 2015 collection. Rodriguez really stuck with the patternless side of minimalism, and kept things in strictly solid colors. He made his designs unique by focusing more on structure. The collection featured styles with strong cut outs and sharp lines, giving every look a very clean, polished feel. Rodriguez is for those minimalists ready to truly commit to the “less-is-more” lifestyle. Similarly to the Acne Studios look featured above, Rodriguez went monochromatic with this white-out look. The light layers in this look keep things feeling breezy and free, while the structure and color choice keep the look structured and refined. If you’re ready to dive head first into minimalism, try out this trend! Look for patternless pieces with clean lines. Slick back your hair or throw it in a tight ponytail and you’re ready to take on the day!
Minimalism is a great trend to try for those looking to give their wardrobe a fresh, clean start. Mugler, Rag & Bone and Madewell are some other awesome spots to shop this trend. Get back to basics and give minimalism a go! I can’t wait to see everyone’s takes on this trend this fall.
