[The WALK Around the World] Moroccan Fashion Staples

Before traveling to Morocco, my study-abroad group was told to dress as conservatively as possible: cover your legs, hide your arms, the looser the fit, the better. As a result, many of the girls I know pulled out the clothes laying in the back of their closets – you know, the ones you thought you’d never wear again but you kept for painting, or dying your hair that chocolate brown color you know will get all over your clothes. When we arrived, however, we were hit with the realization that those worn in, ill-fitting clothes were as inappropriate and embarrassing in Morocco as they would have been in America.

Style in Morocco is bright and bold, with accents of denim and leather. Sure, girls are dressed modestly, but in the time I’ve spent here, I’ve realized you don’t need to sacrifice fashion to be conservative.

As time passed, a few staples became evident in the abroad-student wardrobe, and we’re definitely planning on carrying them back over the Atlantic:

1. Maxi Skirts

The maxi skirt, or dress, is perfect for the warm Moroccan weather. It’s loose and free, while still earning points for modesty. It can be as bold or mellow as you want, as demonstrated in the two very different looks above. These skirts are available all over Morocco in traditional and modern patterns and colors.  Bonus: they’re also great for packing; they take up minimal space but provide maximum style.

2. The Sorbet Pant

If you’re going to wear pants when it’s really hot out, you might as well dress as brightly as possible, right?  Fruity-colored pants work perfectly with a neutral t-shirt and leather jacket. If you’re looking to make an even bigger fashion statement, you can pair them with a big pattern in an accentuating tone.

3. Scarves

Scarves are the perfect accessory to any outfit. Not only do they keep you warm, they also add life and fun to any look, no matter how simple. They come in every shade and pattern, and are available everywhere in Morocco. They’ve become a widespread favorite of girls studying here.

While the style adjustment hasn’t been easy, I’m excited about the prospect of bringing these fun staples back to the States with me.
