Schoolbags for Kids, a company that makes adorable and functional backpacks for young children, is following in the footsteps of the one-for-one business model popularized by TOMS shoes. Every backpack purchased goes towards providing a backpack for a child in need. Upon founder Luis Garcia’s return from a service trip throughout Africa and Eastern Asia, he and his partner, Kalon Gutierrez, decided that the best way to give back was to empower children. They decided to give them school supplies to motivate them to complete their educations. The former luxury brand designers decided to embark on this new venture with a strong and clear social mission: to help impoverished children around the world.
The company has a strong social media presence and is gaining exposure through various platforms like Twitter and Facebook, as well as through the company blog, The Buzzz, run by Gutierrez and Garcia. While the company is most well known for their signature collection backpacks like the “Fuzzy Flyers” and “The Learning Tree”, they also depend heavily on backpack donations. In 2012, they received over 3,500 donations and are aiming to triple that amount in the coming year. The strong social message and active social media presence is undoubtedly the basis of all the successes that Gutierrez and Garcia have achieved.
Next time you are looking for an inspirational gift for a younger brother, sister, cousin or neighbor, definitely consider buying one from Schoolbags for Kids. Not only will it put a smile on your face, but you will also be making a difference to a child in need.
