Change It Up: New Accessories for Winter

Most people choose their bags based on utility. Our Heschel backpacks and Longchamp bags usually have to fulfill some sort of practical purpose: carrying our books, protecting our laptops, or allowing us to blend in with Penn’s social scene. Another noticeable pattern in our bag-related behavior is the tendency to carry the same bag for each occasion, throughout all seasons, ad nauseam. Though there’s nothing wrong with consistency of style, one has to ask: we change our style to fit the season, so why shouldn’t we do the same with the accessories we tote during the winter months?

The year’s coldest season is marked by its parties and the general sense that clothes are getting chicer. In the best cases, outerwear becomes more elegant, and a range of boots and other tasteful accompaniments anchor outfits. Even on the early-morning walk to class, you can see someone who simply looks good. There’s no reason why bags can’t fit into this equation, whether going to class or heading to a downtown BYO. The following selections are the perfect options to fit any winter occasion.

1. On the way to class:

‘Backbag’ Backpack by Ai, $960.48 at FarFetch.

There’s something about wool that is perfect for winter. The tough, naturalistic fabric puts a hardened, edgy accent on cold weather dressing. This backpack invokes images of hunters braving the cold British countryside for sport, but this time with the added panache of fur. As Yoko Ono concisely put it, “winter passes and one remembers one’s perseverance.” Whether trekking to a lecture far away from your dorm or heading to the library for late night studying, this bag provides the perfect change for the season. Simple details like an inside pocket and the ever-popular flap closure make this backpack one of the chicest for winter.

2. Heading to a party:

Glitter Globe Perspex Box Clutch by Kotur, $395.00 at Net-a-Porter.

A rule of thumb: size matters. If you can’t fit your phone in your clutch, you’re doing it wrong. There is no reason to sacrifice practicality for style when going out. The Glitter Globe Perspex box clutch represents the perfect union of being chic and practical. Its box shape and removable gold pouch maximizes on space while the burst of glitter is apropos for any winter occasion. Worn on the backdrop of a minimal black dress or a deep jewel tone pant, this clutch provides the perfect choice for someone whose style errs on the side of dressy.

3. Downtown Shopping:

Drew Textured Leather Tote by Diane von Furstenburg, $272.50 at The Outnet.

Since 2009, Net-a-Porter’s outlet brand, The Outnet, has been a go-to for great steals on great fashion. Originally $545, Diane von Furstenburg’s Drew Textured Leather Tote is on sale, 50% off. At such a good price, you’d be remiss for not taking advantage of such an opportunity. This bag’s features make it the perfect solution to a dash to the department stores. The spacious interior and inner zip pockets provide a place for everything: your iPhone, a quickly scribbled list of things to buy, and your wallet. The two top handles make for ease of carrying, while the adjustable shoulder strap adds the edge of utility. What’s more is the fabulous camel color, a perfect shade to reflect the chic seriousness that winter tends to bring.
