2013 Color of the Year: A Trip to Emerald City

“Lively. Radiant. Lush…A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.”

This is how Pantone LLC, the beauty and fashion industries’ authority on color, describes this year’s pick. They have named Emerald as the 2013 color of the year. While Emerald is much tamer than last year’s Tangerine Tango , it still adds a bold punch of color to an otherwise boring outfit. The intensity of the pigment can bring some serious drama whether it is featured in your make-up for a fabulous night out or even as a color scheme for a den or sun-room. According to Pantone, “this color will be seen over the next 12 months across the fashion industry, beauty, interiors, plastics & packaging, print and graphic design.” The universally flattering quality makes a statement but does not scream for attention.

Sephora will soon debut their 2013 Sephora +Pantone Universe limited collection in March. What will be included in this new line has not been disclosed yet.  Shoppers can sign up on the collection’s listserv to be the first to be notified when the collection is in stores. The company invites customers to “dip into Emerald, a color based on a gem that is rarer than Diamonds”. The line is sure to be exquisite, as green is a shade that matches every skin tone.

In a statement, Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute said, “Green is the most abundant hue in nature—the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum. As it has throughout history, multifaceted emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”

It looks like Emerald is going to be our lucky color for 2013. The options are endless… how will you style it?
