1. Gel Manicures
Gel manicures involve using a high-shine instant dry lacquer, at home or at the salon, which purportedly lasts for up to two weeks with no chipping. These manicures are vibrant and exceptionally high-gloss, and the price point runs anywhere from $30-$40. Most women opt to get them done in the salon, but there are a few at-home kits available by companies like OPI and Sally Hansen. Women rave about gel manicures, but one thing to keep in mind is the removal process. Dissolving the gel from your nails involves a lengthy soak in acetone, which can be harsh for your skin. However, the ease and durability of gel manicures make it a great option for the average Penn student. One local place that offers gel manicures along with an upscale experience is Nail Lounge in Rittenhouse Square ($40). Also check out Nail Bar on 18th St. ($35) for a fun, girly experience — and be sure to bring your friends along!
By waving a magnet over wet polish (check out this Nails Inc. Magnetic Polish sold at Sephora), you can create a unique design on your nails without the hassle of using nail polish pens. Apply a thin layer of the polish to get the most prominent results, and don’t let the polish dry before you grab the magnet. Also, be careful not to touch your nails when they are drying.
3. Sticker Nail Art
With sticker nail art, you can put a professional-looking design on your nails without hitting the salon. The great thing about stickers is that they come in many different designs; it’s easy to find a unique pattern to complement your overall look. The con is that they can be tough to stick on and fit to your nails. They can be a bit pricey, depending on the brand you buy. Check out some of our favorites from Sephora.
4. Glitter & Crackle Nail Polish
Stand-out nails are making it big this fall. Buy a glitter polish to layer over your favorite lacquer (the Sparkle Collection from Urban Outfitters offers excellent options). Glitter is a great way to spice up your muted colored nail polishes. Subtle sparkle can keep your nails work-appropriate and fun, while chunky sparkles over a bright color, like neon pink, pack an exciting punch. Another way to add some pizzazz to your polish: crackle nail color. Crackle polish has been popular for a while and is a great way to add edge to an already great color. Check out these great options from China Glaze, at Amazon.
