Baking with a Microwave and a Mug

The microwave is one of those quintessential college appliances, used frequently to burn popcorn or make Easy Mac. But lately, a new type of microwave cooking has been floating around the internet – one that we think is rather life-changing: making single serving baked goods, like cakes or brownies, in a mug. This recipe below for a chocolate brownie made in a mug is perfect for those cold nights when Insomnia seems too far away and you’re craving a sugar fix.

Two-Minute Mug Brownie (recipe from


1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
Pinch salt
2 tbsp canola or other mild vegetable oil
2 tbsp milk, coffee, or water


Stir together the dry ingredients in a microwave-safe mug until no lumps remain. Add in the oil and milk and stir until you have a thick paste. Then, microwave on high for one minute, checking it after 30 seconds (microwaves vary). It is done when the top is slightly springy but still feels a little gooey.
