Retail Careers 101

Interested in a career in retail? Don’t know what opportunities are available to Penn students? We’ve got you covered. Here are six companies with exciting opportunities coming up for both seniors and underclassmen. Apply through PennLink or the company’s website before the deadlines pass!



Location: New York, NY; Los Angeles, CA and Framingham, MA

Opportunities Available: Corporate Merchandise Training Program and Internship Program

Majors sought: All majors

Qualifications: Sophomores and Juniors, minimum 3.0 GPA

Description: Home to T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, and more, TJX’s training and internship programs offer classroom and on-the-job experience, as well as workshops, networking opportunities and social events in order to prepare their interns for their desired professional track, whether it be buying or planning. The internship is paid and includes corporate housing.

Brown Shoe Company

Location: St. Louis, MO

Opportunities Available: Internships in Product Development, Sourcing, Marketing Merchandising, Finance, Customer Service, Asset Management, Human Resources, and Strategic Planning

Qualifications: Juniors only, no previous experience necessary

Description: Brown Shoe Company, home to shoe giants such as Famous Footwear, Sam Edelman, Franco Sarto, and Naturalizer, is offering a 12-week paid internship for summer 2013. Each intern will be assigned to a live project in whichever area of the company they are assigned to. At the end of the summer, interns will present their projects to senior management. Opportunities Available: Executive Development Programs in MDS Merchants, Product Development, E-Commerce Merchants, and Buying/Planning

Description: Interns are offered a well-rounded experience through training courses as well as hands-on experience aimed to prepare them for a position in Buying or Planning. Interns have a wide range of responsibilities that all have a direct impact on sales and profitability. All internships are paid.


Saks Fifth Avenue

Location: New York, NY

Opportunities Available: Executive Excellence Program

Application Deadline: September 30th via Pennlink

Majors sought: Business majors preferred

Qualifications: Juniors only, minimum 3.0 GPA

Description: Through EEP, interns will have the chance to get classroom instruction as well as hands-on experience. Opportunities to meet with Senior Leadership from certain departments will be available, as well as trips to the market community, New York City flagship store, and photography studio. The internship is paid, and offices are right across from the flagship store onFifth Avenue.


Gap Inc.

Location: San Francisco, CA

Opportunities Available: 9-month Retail Management Program for recent grads, Summer HQ Intern Program

Application Deadline: October 7th for Retail Management Program, applications released in January 2013 for internship opportunity via company website

Majors sought: Business majors preferred

Qualifications: No previous experience necessary

Description: Gap Inc. contains stores such as GAP, Banana Republic, and Piperlime. Both of these opportunities are stationed at their headquarters in CA. The Retail Management Program is a 9-month rotation to learn important aspects of the retail business. Participants rotate through Merchandising, Inventory Management, and Production, usually scattered throughout different Gap Inc. brand stores. The program combines in-class lessons with on-the-job trainings, which help build a firm foundation in the retail industry. The HQ Intern Program is a 10-week program focused on providing knowledge of the retail industry and the corporate world. This internship exposes interns to different career paths within Gap, Inc. and helps build relationships with higher management within Gap Inc. Applications are open online in January 2013.



Location: Minneapolis, MN

Opportunities Available: Full-time positions in Financial & Retail Services, Supply Chain, Product Design & Development, Brand Management and Buying, and Advertising and Marketing

Qualifications: No previous experience necessary
