What Is BB Cream, Anyway?

BB Cream, or beauty/blemish balm, has taken the beauty world like a storm. You might have seen advertisements in Sephora’s windows telling shoppers about this new concoction, or even overheard your co-workers or friends chatting about their new BB cream purchases. Known as the “miracle cream,” this innovative all-in-one formula has everyone rushing to grab their own bottle.

What is it?

BB cream was created in the 1950s by a German dermatologist, who used it to mask the redness of post-peel patients. The product gained popularity in the mid-2000s in Asia and became a must-have beauty item there. But in the recent few months, BB cream has traveled overseas and created a hype here in the States. A tinted moisturizer with skin care ingredients as well as SPF, the cream combines the skin care step with the make up step of your daily morning routine. Some of the extra ingredients might include a face primer, anti-aging serum, different types of moisturizer, and foundation. The combination of all these ingredients affords women more efficient beauty regimens. Plus, it means we don’t have to put as many layers of product onto our skin.

 Which one should I get?

The brand you buy depends on how much you’re willing to spend, and which ingredients you value the most in the product. Here are three of our favorites, which range in price from $52 to $12.99:

Christian Dior Diorsnow UV shield BB Creme SPF 50, $52

This tinted balm’s main aim is to prevent sun damage. In fact, about 19 percent of the formula is zinc dioxide, which helps reduce inflammation and irritation your skin gets from sun rays.  The ingredients work together to counteract skin acidity, and its color-corrective pigments even out your skin tone while brightening your complexion. The pigment is very concentrated, so you don’t need much product to get great coverage.

Smashbox BB Camera Ready Cream SPF 35, $39

This cream produces no grease and aims to absorb shine, especially near the T-zone, for up to eight hours. This is partially because the cream contains primer, which Smashbox is best-known for. The product also comes in different shades, serving well as a foundation. Another plus is that the product is fragrance-free for all those with allergies or sensitivities.

Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector
, $12.99

This formula is very lightweight and wearable, even for over 15 hours. Dawn Davis, beauty editor at Total Beauty Media Inc., observed that her sensitive skin did not break out, even after leaving this cream on for more than a day. The formula also contains vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and brown spots.
