Philly is America’s “Late Night Capital” of Eating, and Not Just Because of Wawa

Philly is America’s “Late Night Capital” of Eating, and Not Just Because of Wawa

Recently, Esquire named Philly the “Late Night Capital of the United States.” I have two thoughts on this: 1) I know, and 2) YUM.

Let’s be honest: we all love late-night eating. While the average human being consumes three meals a day, we college students actually consume four, with that fourth one being sometime between the hours of 11 P.M. and 4 A.M. Now, while we all try to make our meals balanced, this fourth meal usually doesn’t stand a chance at meeting any sort of nutritional standard. Whether you find yourself scarfing down DP Dough, attempting a healthy meal with the Jimmy Johns “unwich,” or giving in to the classic Big Mac, we all know late-night snacking is inevitable.

But sometimes, these campus options just get plain boring. That’s why we must look beyond our bubble in West Philly for some truly fabu-licious late-night dining options. Here are some of Esquire’s favorite spots, along with some of my own, that will make that fourth meal worth every bite.

1. The Dapper Dog Hot Dog Cart, corner of  2nd and Poplar in Northern Liberties, Fri-Sat 9:30pm-2:30am

Keep an eye out for their crazy, loaded hot dogs like the Mashed Potato Dog or the Mac and Cheese Dog.

2. David’s Mai Lai Wah, Chinatown 1001 Race Street. Open til 3am

The pork dumplings with ginger scallion sauce come highly recommended.

3. The Sidecar Bar & Grille, 2201 Christian St., open til 1:30am

Check out the pretzel-crusted chicken fingers and truffle mashed potatoes…we’re in.

4.  Alla Spina, 1410 Mt. Vernon St., open til 2am on Fri-Sat

The soft pretzels, beer-cheese dip, and the chocolate bacon sundae are musts!

5. Miss Tootsie’s, 1312 South St., open til 2am Fri-Sat

In the mood for some Southern Comfort? Look no further. Fried chicken ‘n biscuits are here.

6. Pat’s or Geno’s Steaks, 1237 East Passyunk /1219 S. 9th St, both open 24/7

When in Philly…gotta have some cheesesteak love to represent. I don’t want to attract any haters, so you pick Pat’s or Geno’s.  Philly Mag recently declared Geno’s the best though…just sayin’.

It’s all about the late night.
