Penn Fashion Week has finally arrived, and there’s no better event to cap off a spectacular week of fashion than Masquerade, the Spring Fashion Show. The show will feature both student and professional apparel, and one of the most exciting parts of the show is seeing student models and student designs grace the runway.

The show is Friday, March 30th, starting at 9 PM in the ballroom of the Inn at Penn. General admission tickets are $10. VIP tickets are $15 and include front row seats and gift bags.

The WALK interviewed some student designers about their experience working on the show. See if you can spot their designs on the runway this Friday!

Designs by Kelly Wyche

Name: Kelly Wyche

Year: 2013

School: Wharton

How many pieces did you design, and can you describe them?: I’m doing four pieces that can be mixed and matched into three or four looks. I have an emerald green pencil skirt, some cutout pants, a tutu-type skirt, and a top with beading.

What inspired your designs?: I designed clothes I wanted but couldn’t find in stores, and I also experimented with bold colors versus beading.

What made you want to design for the show?: I had never done it before spring of last year, but I wrote about it for The WALK, thought it was very cool, and wanted to try it out.

Have you designed for the show before?: Yes, spring 2011

Who is your favorite designer?: Yves Saint Laurent

What are some hot trends you predict for spring?: Wide bell-bottom pants and cutouts

What is your dream fashion item?: A pair of Louboutins

Designer Mandi Liu

Name: Adam Warner and Mandi Liu

Year: 2015

School: Engineering

How many pieces did you design, and can you describe them?: We designed five pieces, and they’re all romantic, ethereal, chiffon pieces ranging from evening wear to casual wear.

What inspired your designs?: The professional Spring 2012 fashion shows and their romantic and abstract pieces.

What made you want to design for the show?: Mandi: I’m into fashion, and I wanted to do an activity that wasn’t engineering or math related.

Who is your favorite designer?: Mandi: Jason Wu

What are some hot trends you predict for spring?: Mandi: Floral pants and pastels

What is one fashion faux pas you can’t stand?: Mandi: Short shorts with Ugg boots

Designer Susan Yang

Name: Susan Yang

Year: 2013

School: College

How many pieces did you design, and can you describe them?: I designed three pieces, and I would describe them as a progression of colors. The first one is a black lace dress, the second one is a cream dress reminiscent of Chanel back in the day, and the last one is a white chiffon gown.

What inspired your designs?: The Alexander McQueen exhibition (where lace was in), romantic/regal looks, and the Tom & Lorenzo blog.

What made you want to design for the show?: I knew people who designed for it and I love fashion, so I thought why not give it a try.

Who is your favorite designer?: The Lanvin House

What are some hot trends you predict for spring?: Color-blocking and peplums

What is one fashion faux pas you can’t stand?: When people wear clothes that are wrong for their proportions. Clothes are like makeup. They should highlight your best assets.

What is your dream fashion item?: A set of vintage Louis Vuitton luggage

Designer Mckenzie Harper

Name: Ann Dang and Mckenzie Harper

Year: 2012

School: Wharton

How many pieces did you design, and can you describe them?: We’re doing eight pieces. Our collection has a lot of rich, bright colors with undertones that go together and pieces with black accents. We played a lot with texture, and the pieces are mostly dresses and skirts with one pair of shorts.

What inspired your designs?: We did pieces that we’d like to wear, and a lot of them are edgy with black accents and range in length of the hemlines.

What made you want to design for the show?: We’re second semester seniors, so we have a little bit more time. Plus we wanted to design together.

Do you have previous design experience?: Mckenzie: I used to sew my own clothes. Ann: I’m the costume designer for Bloomers.

Who is your favorite designer?: Mckenzie: Diane von Furstenberg. Ann: Lanvin.

What are some hot trends you predict for spring?: Crochet, color-blocking, printed pants

What is one fashion faux pas you can’t stand?: Grey shirts with khaki pants and way too much animal print

What is your dream fashion item?: Mckenzie: A Cartier lock bracelet. Ann: A Burberry Prorsum leather jacket.

Designer Huong Bui-Vu

Name: Bernice Kong and Huong Bui-Vu

Year: 2013

School: College

How many pieces did you design, and can you describe them?: We’re doing six pieces, and they’re girly, dressy, bright, and colorful.

What inspired your designs?: We were initially inspired by wings, but we ended up branching out. You can still see butterfly designs and peacock feathers in some of the pieces though.

What made you want to design for the show?: We wanted to work together, and we’re both into design, so this was an opportunity to showcase our work.

Have you designed for the show before?: Huong: Yes, spring 2011

Who is your favorite designer?: Huong: Alexander McQueen

What are some hot trends you predict for spring?: Lots of color, but also minimalistic looks in the style of Rooney Mara

What is one fashion faux pas you can’t stand?: Shorts and Uggs and clashing color combos

What is your dream fashion item?: Huong: Alexander McQueen’s feather dress. Bernice: a comfy pair of heels.
