Springtime Swaps: Menswear to Update Now

With this week’s incredibly warm weather, it’s evident that spring has sprung at Penn. While you may be tempted to start wearing those shorts you bought three years ago or your favorite frat tank, it may be time for a wardrobe update here and there. Here we present The WALK’s guide to men’s spring-cleaning.

J. Crew Bowery Shorts

Ah, your old standby pair of shorts. Sure, you bought them freshman year, and they’ve got a couple stains on them, but no one notices that, right? False. It’s time to upgrade those too-long, baggy shorts to something more mature and fresh. And if you’re planning on wearing cargo shorts, please change those plans immediately. Shorts should not sag or be too loose around the leg, and the hem should fall somewhere between mid-thigh and the top of your knee.  Don’t be afraid to wear a colorful pair either, a lot of shades like light blue or Nantucket red can be paired with a large range of shirts. And if you’re really feeling adventurous, go for a seersucker pair — just match them with a collared shirt, and wait until after Memorial Day to wear them regularly. Here are our picks for a springtime update.

Southern Proper's Frat Hat

We understand. Your then-girlfriend/boyfriend said you looked cute in a fedora, so you wore it to a Jack Johnson concert once in 2008 and never stopped. Go ahead and put it away — and only pull it back out when you’re dressing up as Justin Timberlake on Halloween. Hats are a great part of springtime attire to keep the sun off your face, so stick to classic styles and check out these caps for both style and function.

Ralph Lauren Espadrilles

Sandals are a sore subject in men’s fashion. On one hand, you need them for the beach and hot days. On the other, you’re pretty sure your feet are probably not your most appealing feature. Go ahead and chuck those Tevas, Birkenstocks, and Crocs to save your style — unless you’re a mountain climber, hippie, or nurse. Then those are kind of part of your persona. Here are a couple sandal-alternatives for days down the shore.

Sperry Topsider Boat Shoe, $90

Persol tortoise-shell sunglasses

Spring weather means brighter days and more time outside. Swap out your plastic neon sunglasses for a sharper-looking pair of shades on days when you want to look more business than casual, because you never know who you’ll meet while strolling down the Schuykill. Channel Steve McQueen in a timeless pair of Persols, and save the plastic glasses for the best part of the season — Spring Fling.
