They say that the suit makes the man. But at Commonwealth Proper, a men’s boutique housed across the Schuylkill River in Rittenhouse Square, it’s the man that makes the suit.
Owner Craig Arthur von Schroeder – who happens to also be an attorney and former professional soccer player – crafts fine suits for his Philadelphia shop with strong attention to tailoring and cut. The shop was named in honor of a group of nineteenth-century Philadelphia tailors, though the “Proper” signifies the store’s belief that “men’s clothing, above all else, should fit properly.”
Commonwealth Proper sells both ready-to-wear and custom suits, as well as neckties, scarves and wallets. While investing in a custom suit may seem extravagant, it’s hard to disagree that a well-made suit is essential to success. Check out their website to see more looks.
